PT United Tractors Tbk (UT) collaborated with the Surabaya City Government to inaugurate Indonesia’s first Mangrove Botanical Garden. This collaboration is UT’s real step in supporting environmental preservation, as well as an effort to educate the public about the importance of conserving mangrove ecosystems. The inauguration ceremony was held at the Mangrove Botanical Gardens, Gunung Anyar District, Surabaya City on (26/07/2023).
The inauguration of the Mangrove Botanical Garden was attended by Megawati Soekarnoputri (Fifth President of the Republic of Indonesia) who was accompanied by Khofifah Indar Parawansa (Governor of East Java). In the process, the inauguration was marked by the signing of the inscription by Megawati Soekarnoputri, who was accompanied by Laksana Tri Handoko (Chairman of the Steering Committee for the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and Eri Cahyadi (Mayor of Surabaya).
Megawati Soekarnoputri expressed her appreciation to all parties for their commitment to collaborate in environmental preservation. “The cooperation carried out by various parties in inaugurating the Surabaya Mangrove Botanical Garden is a clear proof of their shared commitment to maintaining environmental sustainability. Collaboration between parties like this must be carried out consistently, especially in the preservation of mangroves and fauna,” said Megawati Soekarnoputri.
UT, through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) pillar in the environmental sector, United Tractors for Nature and Environment Sustainability (UTREES), is committed to positively impacting the environment by providing rare mangrove seeds of the criteria littoral type. In addition, UT also supports the development of edu-eco-tourism areas to help improve the quality of the environment in Indonesia.
UT’s Head of Corporate Sustainability and Governance, Sara K. Loebis, revealed UT will continue to collaborate with various parties to reduce carbon emissions, which is part of the company’s target in implementing sustainable business principles through the implementation of environmental, social, governance (ESG) aspects.
“This collaboration is one of the milestones for UT in protecting and preserving the environment, especially in relation to the mangrove ecosystem. The Mangrove Botanical Garden will become an educational center for the public to better understand biodiversity and the important role of mangroves in balancing coastal ecosystems,” said Sara K. Loebis.
The Surabaya Mangrove Botanical Garden functions as a nature conservation and tourist destination with 34 hectares, covering three areas, including 11 hectares of Mount Anyar, 7 hectares of Wonorejo, and 16 hectares of Medokan Sawah. The number of collections owned by this mangrove botanical garden is 57, consisting of terrestrial and true mangroves.
UT hopes that collaboration like this can continue to be established consistently and sustainably to provide benefits and added value effectively in preventing climate change. In addition, it can help improve the welfare of the surrounding community by utilizing mangrove forest resources to support daily life.
