The implementation of Bird Banding and Biodiversity Index Calculation in Mount Arjuno, Batu, and Mangrove Botanical Garden, Surabaya.

Jakarta, June 21, 2024 – PT United Tractors Tbk (UT) collaborates with Wildlife Ecology Foundation (EKSAI) to carry out Bird Banding and Biodiversity Index (IKH) Calculation Activities as a part of a commitment to protecting biodiversity. This activity aims to address the impact of disasters that have caused the area to become bare. This activity occurred at the Mount Arjuno area, Sumbergondo Village, Batu City, on June 3-6, 2024. Furthermore, this activity also took place in the Mangrove Botanical Garden, Gunung Anyar District, Surabaya, on June 10-13, 2024

“The bird banding and IKH calculation activities carried out by UT are one of the efforts to develop more effective strategies in protecting and restoring the ecosystem around the company’s operational area. In addition, by this activity, UT also supports the local community that relies on the area,” said CSR Manager Himawan Sutanto.

Bird banding or tagging is one method of effectively monitoring a bird’s population and migration. In this activity, an expert team from EKSAI and UT will catch, mark, and release birds to learn their habits and movements. The data collected will help in conservation efforts and sustainable habitat management.

In this case, the UT Team marked 19 birds consisting of 7 species, some of which are Paok Pancawarna, Cinenen Jawa, and  Pelanduk Semak in Mount Arjuno. Meanwhile, twenty four birds and seven species were caught in Mangrove Botanical Garden, Surabaya. The purpose of IKH counting is to record the species distribution data in the region. Then, the results of this activity will be reported to the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).

The success indicator of this revegetation activity is the increase in the number and the types of birds that survive in the planting area. It is hoped that by implementing this activity, the number and types of birds that visit and live can be more diverse.

Other parties, such as Perum Perhutani KPH Malang, Sumbergondo village government, and Technical Executive Unit (UPT) Mangrove Botanical Garden Surabaya, attended the implementation of this activity. This activity was also attended by representatives of UT, EKSAI, Sumbergondo village head, KRPH Junggo Perum Perhutani, Forest Farmers (Pesanggem), UPT Mangrove Botanical Garden, and the local community.
